We sent Heavy Drags from Montrose/Grand Junction some questions. Andrew Watson, lead singer and guitarist, sent us answers.
(DJ Goo): Who are you and where are you from?
Andrew: I am Andrew Patrick Watson and I am from Page, Arizona. An amazing little town but desolate as fuck.
What’s this ‘Heavy Drags’ thing all about?
Andrew: HD is a band of fathers and lovers that make time to rock the fuck out. We love rock ‘n’ roll music.
How long have you been playing music?
Andrew: My first band was in 1989; we were called Hippy Love Grove. We played Metallica and Misfits jams.
What made you decide to start playing music?
Andrew: Listening to Duran Duran in the 3rd Grade. I had a friend that moved from California who had buttons all over her jacket and I was so stoked about it, I became obsessed. Then my cousin introduced me to skating and The Cure when I was in 4th grade. I wanted to play music ever since.
What have been the most rewarding/challenging aspects about being in a band?
Andrew: Rewarding? Watching people get down at shows. Challenging? Trying to find time to practice.
How do you promote your shows?
Andrew: I make all my own posters; I have been making posters since 1991. We used to use a photo copier and paste-ups. Now I use the computer and silkscreen as much as I can. Facebook event pages help out a lot too.
DIY or Record Label?
Andrew: Depends on if you want to live of music or struggle forever. I used to be really into DIY, but if you want to be successful, you are going to need help from other outlets.
Favorite album of the moment?
Andrew: John Maus’ album ”Love Is Real”. It reminds me of bands I used to listen to when I was younger. I also have been listening to a lot of Brian Eno’s “Here Come The Warm Jets”.
John Maus – The Silent Chorus
Brian Eno – Baby’s On Fire

Andrew: A surf shop in Encinitas with my band Sound Of Sirens in 1997. Good times and fun people… and surf boards.
What’s the craziest thing you’ve done on stage?
Andrew: I spit on a teenage girl who was throwing shit and spitting on me. I got some phlegm build-up and spit it right in her mouth. Pretty gnarly.
Any advice for the people reading this?
Andrew: Live it up as soon as possible and create some shit.
