Album Review: Red Hands- Your Forgotten Love

“What type of music do you like?”
“Oh, I like all kinds!”

Most people use this answer followed by “..except country and rap. Oh and classical and jazz.” Which just proves they don’t like all kinds of music. Me? I truly do like ALL kinds of music. From classical to scream-o metal. I also really enjoy listening to new bands and discovering new music. I’m sure most of you have heard of “Free Music Fridays” from absolutepunk.net (if you haven’t, go check it out. Everyone loves free music!!), which is one of my favorite places to find new music, FOR FREEE!! In early October I downloaded the album “Red Hands” by the band Your Forgotten Love. I listened to it right away and let me tell you, I was not impressed. So why am I writing this review almost a month after downloading the album? I wanted to make sure I did not like it before I warned you not to download it.

I like to give all music a chance. And I’ve tried for a solid month to give this band a chance, yet my opinion does not change. I have an extremely difficult time making it through two songs without wanting to poke my ear drums with a hot iron to save myself. I did a little research on the bands Myspace page (I’m sorry…but if you’re band only has a Myspace page with band photos that look like they were taken in your back yard with a crappy digital camera, you’re destined for failure..) and this is what they say about themselves:
“This fusing of their literary and musical passions ignited Your Forgotten Love….. Culling many of their lyrics from classic works, this songwriting duo build dark and grandiose arrangements, balancing the delicate and the foreboding.”

“Powerful, intelligent, and imbued with mystery, ..Red Hands.. is an unforgettable record from a truly unique band..”
Really though? The only thing I find grandiose is how much they suck. God strikes my soul for even assailing my ears with this junk then delicately wipes my tears away with the pedal of a lilly for turning away from such atrocities. Now, the lyrics may be intelligent and portray their “literary passion.” But I cannot get passed the lead singers voice to listen to the words. Rather than singing “Indie” (what they proclaim to be on their Myspace profile) she sounds like she should be buried in one of those huge Catholic choirs that sing the creepy Latin music. Because then no one would hear her. Don’t get me wrong, some may like it, but I guess I’m not a fan of whiney quality. Now, to touch on the actual musical aspect of the album. There are a lot of good things going on and there are sections in songs I like individually. But here’s what happens that makes me regret saying I like anything about this album: they will go from a nice acoustic guitar sound with some piano to some really bad mixture of all the instruments (piano, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, flute [wtf?] and drums) attempting a..haunting metal sound? Mixing what could be some nice Indie acoustic with electric wannabe-creepy-metal is just abhorrent to me. I don’t even know how to explain it. All I know is that it sounds horrible. I actually just tried to listen to a part in the song “See or Shut your Eyes” to see if it would evoke some words for me to describe to you and all I could come up with was “Turn it off.

If readers want to disregard your warning and listen to it for themselves, let them. They will come back with tears in their eyes and apologize for not listening to your mighty word.”
All in all- worst music I’ve ever downloaded. AND IT WAS FREE!! Do not download this album in any capacity. Save yourself.
